Dosa Man at Washington Square Park

The Dosa Man at Washington Square Park is already famous. He has been reviewed by every major magazine and newspaper in New York, and usually the queue at his stall stretches to the corner of the block.

Luckily for me, on this warm spring day, Thiru Kumar had very few customers, and was able to oblige me with a Special Pondicherry Masala Dosa. As he made the Dosa, he figured out I was Tamil, and started an easy banter. Did I want my Dosa bland, medium spicy, or extra spicy? I was feeling adventurous. Extra Spicy, I said.

The Dosa did not disappoint on the spice – the fire on my tongue and the sunshine on my face fit together perfectly. This was Dosa heaven without the pocket pinching. However, I did note that the Dosa tasted different from what I was used to in India. This could be because of three reasons:

1. Thiru Kumar is Sri Lankan (remember that I currently love all things Sri Lanka.)

2. The Special Pondicherry Masala Dosa is made ‘Special’ by the use of Lettuce and Red Bell Peppers, which are distinctly un-desi.

3. Thiru Kumar makes his Dosas in Olive Oil. Yes, Olive Oil. I kid you not.

Now before it starts raining again, go eat some Dosa at Washington Square Park.
