Bollywood on Ice at the Olympics

February 23, 2010

Yes, its true: the US Figure Skating Team picked Bollywood as their theme for the Olympics. Meryl Davis and Charlie White said their performance was inspired by a Mumbai wedding. So he’s the groom, doing some weird Krishna-morphs-into-Shiva poses, in a sequinned (gulp) pseudo-sherwani. And she’s the bride, but because of the crazy norms that govern women’s figure skating, her lehenga is mid-thigh. Thats a bridal trend the Mumbai trendsetters should be picking up on pretty soon.

But all their performance proved was a universal truth: nobody does Bollywood like Bollywood can. Here’s the video of Davis and White going desi:

Seriously, that choreography sucks. It’s so lack-lustre and low-energy. Especially considering they picked two of Aishwarya Rai‘s BIGGEST dance hits! The original videos are after the jump, if you want some comparison; or if like me, this watered down performance has left you thirsting for the real stuff.

Here is Vaibhavi Merchant‘s choreography for the first song: Kajra Re, from the film Bunty Aur Bubli (2005)

And then dance maestro Saroj Khan‘s choreography for the last song: Dola Re, from the film Devdas (2002)

Advice to all future figure skating teams who want to go Bollywood – you need two crucial hires: Manish Malhotra for costumes, and Saroj Khan for choreography. If you can teach Aishwarya Rai figure skating, all the better.
