Holi! Qawwali! Bharatnatyam!

February 21, 2010
Holi is on its way! Spring is in the air, and the colour powders are calling to you! Just because you live in New York, doesn’t mean you need to miss this Desi Saturnalia. Go on down to Pier 16 at South Street Seaport on March 14, and get on Peking Ship for  riotous Holi fun. This is a +21 year olds only event, so be prepared for some wildness. What is Holi, after all, but Hinduism’s occasion for some serious partying?
If Sufi music is more your groove, then you’re in luck. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, acclaimed Pakistani Qawwali peformer, will be working his magic at Queens College on April 17th. Qawwali is a very popular music form, and if done right can transport the audience. You maybe very sure that Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will do it right. Make sure you book your seats well in advance, because they’re sure to run out pretty soon.

Another culture event for your Desi Calendar is a Bharatnatyam performance on February 27th, at Simple Studios on West 29th Street. Mohamana will be performed by the Dakshinapalli dance company, in the tradition of legendary Bharatnatyam danseuse Balasaraswati.
